The Stabilisation Platform
The Stabilisation Platform (SPF) operates on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office and strengthens its efforts in crisis and conflict regions worldwide.
Our mission
The Federal Foreign Office pursues a model of foreign policy driven by interests and action, which aims to manage and resolve crises and conflicts. To safeguard the strategic interests of Germany and Europe, the Federal Foreign Office supports specific local projects in selected crisis regions that promote both the prevention and the resolution of conflict. Conflicts in other regions of the world can jeopardise security, freedom and prosperity in Europe. The Stabilisation Platform helps to steer projects and measures aimed at conflict de-escalation and prevention.
Our task
Traditional diplomacy in crisis contexts is complemented by targeted foreign policy projects. In countries marked by conflict that are particularly significant for German and European security interests, the SPF supports the Federal Foreign Office in providing impetus for prevention, conflict resolution and peace and in strengthening legitimate state structures. The Stabilisation Platform supports the Federal Foreign Office in implementing these projects effectively – often in collaboration with EU or international partners. The SPF engages experienced experts who support and advise the Federal Foreign Office on the development, planning and steering of projects in complex crisis situations. These experts also frequently work locally and thus contribute to the security of Germany and Europe.
Objectives and instruments
Germany and Europe jointly formulate their peace policy, geopolitical and economic objectives. To implement these objectives, the Federal Foreign Office applies established and tested instruments for crisis prevention, stabilisation and peacebuilding. Specifically, this involves strengthening the capacity for action and legitimacy of cooperating state actors in conflict regions, curbing violence, and promoting reforms and sustainable peace. This approach combines civilian and military instruments, involves partner countries, and is anchored in strategically oriented diplomacy.
The focus of foreign policy project work is currently on Near and Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, the eastern neighbouring countries and Central Asia. The projects aim to support civilian security agencies, the disarmament of former combatants, the promotion of mediation, and the strengthening of the rule of law and democracy. The Stabilisation Platform supports the Federal Foreign Office in implementing these instruments locally in the partner countries or in cooperation with international and multilateral institutions.

The Stabilisation Platform is hosted by the federal enterprise Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, but operates independently in terms of content.
